NGOs with valid UN grounds passes need not indicate prior interest in attending events unless specified by event sponsors. Side events on UN premises are not ticketed this year unless they are by invitation only. 

Some side event organizers make a limited number of special event tickets available to guests who do not have a UN grounds pass. If you are a guest who does not have a UN grounds pass and have received confirmation from the organizer that a special event ticket has been granted to you, please pick up the ticket at the time and location specified by the side event organizer. Please do not enter the UN premises without your special event ticket. The CSW information desk or registration desk do not have special event tickets for side events.

    With urgent programs on women, peace, and security being launched from October to January of this year, including the Justice for Salwa is Justice for All campaign (which demands justice for assassinations and attacks against women human rights defenders, and asks for better protection and security for women to participate at all levels of advocacy), the 59th session is a crucial moment in the international women's movement and a critical opportunity for leaders from the Arab region to lend their voices in reviewing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action twenty years after its adoption and look at the way forward in achieving goals on gender equality, human rights, and peace. In previous years, Karama successfully garnered media attention and political engagement to build awareness of the priorities for women in the Arab region and share experiences and insights from the work women's rights leaders were doing on the ground. Karama has hosted delegations representing 13 countries, putting women's rights leaders and activists face-to-face with US congress members, the Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communication to President Obama -Ben Rhodes-, academic leaders such as Isobel Coleman of the Council for Foreign Relations and Jane Harman -Director, President and CEO of the Wilson Center-, Special Rapporteurs on Violence against Women, Human Rights Officers from the OHCHR, as well as members of the Security Council. Karama's delegations have also hosted panels convening governments, international activists, and UN representatives and sharing strategic research and recommendations on topics ranging from women's political participation to challenges to women's security following the Arab uprisings. Recently, in parallel with this work, Karama and its partners launched the Arab Regional Network on Women, Peace, and Security. This network is an outcome of a strategic training on women, peace, and security held in cooperation with the European Union and the League of Arab States. Since then, the network has continued to build momentum at the regional-level, issuing a ten-point manifesto calling on the international community for support on ten main issue areas, and at the national-level, working to develop national action plans on UN SCR 1325.

    A growing body of evidence is proving the importance of including social norms into development interventions in order to accelerate progress on gender equality. Discriminatory social norms significantly limit women's access to empowerment opportunities, infringe their human rights and put a brake on development processes. These require a multi-pronged approach that takes into account the embedded discrimination against women in laws, practices and attitudes. Speakers will present new results from the Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI), and make the case for how social norms can be integrated into development policy and development operations in order to accelerate progress towards the Beijing agenda as well as the post 2015 framework.

    As part of the observance of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This exhibition pays tribute to the many enslaved women who endured unbearable hardships, including sexual exploitation, as well as those who fought for freedom from slavery and advocated for its abolition. It also celebrates the strength of enslaved women, many of whom successfully transmitted their African culture to their descendants despite the many abuses they endured.     Women and poverty, identified 20 years ago as a critical area of concern in the Beijing Platform for Action, continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing development efforts of governments all over the world. With respect to this area, the Philippines and Uruguay face similar challenges as countries from the South. As such, these countries have come up with their respective responses to women and poverty.     Women's voices - whether individual or collective - have proven to be fundamental to advance women's rights at national and international levels. Online communities and social media have become essential for women's rights groups to push for greater accountability and action on gender equality. But the WHO also reported that the preventable nature of violence against women is "not an article of faith, but a statement based on evidence". How can we stop violence against women from happening in the first place? What is needed at the individual, community and government levels to challenge existing social norms?     The Impact on gender equality and women's empowerment : The Ebola outbreak has further increased the vulnerability faced by women and girls given its gender dimensions in the affected countries - Liberia, Siera Leaone, and Guinea. Based on consultations held by different stakeholders, it is evident that the outbreak had differential impact on women as compared to men due to traditional gender-based roles, behaviour and power structures. The disruption of the availability of non-Ebola health services in both Liberia and Sierra Leone, has shown disproportionate impact on women as more frequent users of the healthcare system. The already fragile health system capacity in these countries has been overwhelmed and unable to adequately address the needs of women to access maternal health services including delivery and antenatal care. Constraints on the health systems in the most affected areas also limited access to other sexual and reproductive health services for women and girls, outside of antenatal care and delivery - including access to anti-retroviral drugs and treatment for women and girls living with HIV, and family planning services as reported in Liberia. The outbreak has significant economic implications for women and girls. Restrictions on movement between affected countries, designed to halt the spread of the disease, have resulted in a shortage of available goods and services. These restrictions have, in particular, jeopardized the livelihoods of women. More women than men are employed in the informal sector and in agriculture in the region. In particular, the economic impact of the outbreak affected smallholder farmers, who are predominantly women, and cross-border traders (70% women in the Mano-River Union region). In both Liberia and Sierra Leone, the Ebola outbreak also exacerbated insecurity and social instability and further reinforced gender inequities -particularly putting women and girls at risk of sexual and gender based violence (GBV), compromising their health, dignity, safety and autonomy. The Ebola outbreak further impacted the education system mainly in the three affected areas i.e. in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. With only 15% of girls completing secondary education in Sierra Leone, while in other affected countries, girls drop out at the age of 15 as a result of early marriages, pregnancies and entrenched harmful traditional practices. The Ebola outbreak was untimely and further reduced the chances of women participation in decision making at various levels. In areas most affected by the outbreak, women's role and participation in decision making was substituted to care giving for the infected persons at the household level. With reducing incidences of Ebola in countries such as Liberia and Sierra Leone, there is a steady increase in the number of Ebola survivors in the affected countries. Sierra Leone alone counts for 7000 orphans, of which more than 55% of these are girls. In addition, Liberia has over 4100 orphans in all the 15 counties. Sierra Leone also registered about 2000 Ebola survivors in the last 4 months Interventions of reintegrating survivors back to communities have been limited, coupled with the wide spread of stigma of this group within communities.

    Currently the world only measures the poverty of households, not individuals, with poverty measures mainly focused on money; however, there are other factors that also matter to poor women and men. This side event will introduce The Individual Deprivation Measure (IDM), which is the first poverty measurement tool in the world to enable accurate sex-disaggregation of data, based on the views of poor women and men. The panel will outline the methodology of the IDM and discuss how Governments and policy makers can use the tool to better understand the differences in how women and men experience poverty, so as to address poverty more effectively.

    The 10th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in October 2010 highlighted the increasing demand for accountability to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda of the UN Security Council. As we are preparing for the 15th anniversary, IAW expresses its concern about the fact that only 48 Member States out of 192 have adopted national action plans. Women are still underrepresented if not totally absent in most official peace negotiations and sexual violence in conflict is increasing in number and brutality. The side event will explore the opportunities of monitoring the implementation of UNSC Res. 1325 and following resolutions through reporting requirements under CEDAW. This also includes Res. 1820 linking sexual violence as a tactic of war with the maintenance of international peace and security.
